I heard Everlast’s “What It’s Like” on the radio this morning and it took me back years and years to my high school days. I remember exactly where I was when I first heard that song. It struck a chord in me then because the lyrics beautifully communicate the necessity for compassion and empathy in a variety of situations. It was one of those Aha! moments when I was again reminded that every human has their unique story, with tragedy, comedy, drama, triumph, and defeat. The message of this song has stayed with me throughout all these years, with other lessons in empathy, kindness, grace, and compassion being added to it. I’m a better person for having heard it, so today I thought I’d share it with you. There are some raw lyrics and words in it, but life is raw. Pretending otherwise gets us nowhere. People need real love, not judgment from us.
